Benefits of Buying from a Family Bakery
Nobody can deny the changes the world faced with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Millions of Americans found themselves altering the way they lived in almost every aspect of how they dined, shopped, learned, worked, and patronized their favorite businesses. Many small businesses were able to think outside the box and pivot quickly to adapt to the changes offering curbside takeout, and delivery options. Supporting local businesses become more important than ever, a notion we should be following on an everyday basis, regardless of a pandemic. Small, family-owned businesses are the backbone of our country, they keep the dream alive and offer stability and a sense of pride to owners and the community. Small businesses employ 77 million Americans and accounted for 65% of all new jobs over the past 17 years. Here are some other key benefits to supporting local.
Keeps money in the community
Let’s face it, big box stores and chain stores were mostly unscathed by the pandemic, locally owned businesses are important because they recycle a much larger scale of their revenue right back into the local economy which is a win-win for both parties. For every $100 you spend at a local business, $68 will stay in the community.
Family history
A family-owned bakery typically uses their own family recipes and locally-sourced ingredients that you will never find in big box stores or chains giving the flavors of the products truly unique one-of-a-kind flavors.
Unique footprint
In a world of sameness, local businesses offer their consumers products and a distinctive character you can’t find in big box stores. The products usually always have distinctive flair you can’t find anywhere which makes people not only seek these types of shops but keep them coming back.
Part of the community
Local family-owned business owners are your own neighbors, they have a vested interest in the community, schools, parks, and overall aesthetics of the vibrant community they serve. Supporting local businesses can also be better for the environment because of the smaller carbon footprint than larger companies.
Gives the community personality
Picture for a moment in your head, your favorite community. What is it that you love the most? Most likely you answered the unique shops, restaurants, bakeries, and other specialty stores and boutiques. Every community has its own unique fingerprint you can’t find anywhere else and supporting local stores keeps that personality thriving.
Potter’s Bakery has been proudly serving customers since 1929 as a local 3rd generation family bakery. In 1929 Norman and Julia Potter opened the first location in downtown Traverse City. Shortly after opening they had to close up shop due to the sugar rations and then later reopened. They ran the shop with a handful of employees until Norman partnered with his son Jerry, Mike’s Dad, who owned and ran the bakery into the 50’s when Jerry bought his Dad out and ran the business solo. Mike and Kathy decided to keep the tradition alive in 1984 and have been here daily ever since! You could say it is a labor of love! We are proud to have remained a staple in our community by offering a full-line bakery offering cakes and tortes, bars, freshly made bread, cookies, our famous danish, donuts, muffins, and wedding specialty items.
