“Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.” ~ Ernestine Ulmer

When you’re armed with a myriad of dessert choices there’s nothing stopping you. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, had a hard week, want to flex your adult status and eat dessert before the main course, or are simply satisfying a craving, dessert is a simple pleasure in life that can’t be denied. I mean, if we’re being honest, is life even worth living with desserts? At Potter’s Bakery, we think not. Here are some of our favorite choices and the history of the dessert!

Tortes:

A torte /ˈtɔːrt/[1] (from German Torte (German pronunciation: [ˈtɔrtə] (in turn from Latin via Italian torta) is a rich, usually multilayered, cake that is filled with whipped cream, buttercreams, mousses, jams, or fruits. Ordinarily, the cooled torte is glazed and garnished. Tortes are commonly baked in a springform pan. Sponge cake is a common base, but a torte's cake layers may instead be made with little to no flour, using ingredients such as ground nuts or breadcrumbs. Danish: A Danish pastry, sometimes shortened to just Danish (especially in American English), is a multilayered, laminated sweet pastry in the viennoiserie tradition. The concept was brought to Denmark by Austrian bakers and has since developed into a Danish specialty. Like other viennoiserie pastries, such as croissants, it is a variant of puff pastry made of laminated yeast-leavened dough that creates a layered texture. Danish pastries were brought with immigrants to the United States, where they are often topped with a fruit or cream cheese filling and are now popular around the world. Brownies and Bars:

One legend about the creation of brownies is that of Bertha Palmer, a prominent Chicago socialite whose husband owned the Palmer House Hotel. In 1893 Palmer asked a pastry chef for a dessert suitable for ladies attending the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. She requested a cake-like confection smaller than a piece of cake that could be included in boxed lunches. The result was the Palmer House Brownie with walnuts and an apricot glaze. The modern Palmer House Hotel serves a dessert to patrons made from the same recipe. The name was given to the dessert sometime after 1893, but was not used by cookbooks or journals at the time. Whether you’re craving a traditional fudge brownie or a delicious bar, you can’t go wrong with these varieties.
